Juneteenth - Let Freedom Ring! - Part 1
This weekend I had the incredible opportunity to go to the Atlanta History Center in celebration of Juneteenth. What is Juneteenth? Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans throughout the former Confederacy of the southern United States. Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in forty-five states. 1, 2
During this opportunity at the Atlanta History Center, I had the chance to see bestselling author, James Beard Award Winner for Writing and Cookbook of the Year and renowned culinary historian Michael W. Twitty, BBQ Nation Cooking Demonstration. Mr. Twitty is the author of The Cooking Gene: A Journey Through African American Culinary History in the Old South and a food blogger for Afroculinaria . (You have definitely got to read his incredible book!) During his cooking demonstration, Mr. Twitty demonstrated the rich history of African and African American food traditions in Southern barbecue.
Check out my slide show below on what I was able to see during the cooking demonstration and also check out my Instagram videos .
