Did You Walk Your Dog Today?

Happy New Year Everyone! What are you plans this new year? I love my furry children, and I enjoy our daily walks together. I find that my time walking them gives me a chance to meditate. I always feel that not only do I benefit from our walks, but I see and hear that my dogs also. This month is to Walk Your Dog, and it is the best time for you and your furry children to start living healthy.

In a 2017 clinical survey carried out by the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention, it was found that 56% of dogs in the United States are obese equating to 50.2 million dogs across the Nation. Why are so many dogs are not getting the exercise that they need? The biggest reason that people are not walking their dogs is that they are too busy and not having enough time. I guess that is why we feel that there are not enough hours in a day to take care of ourselves also.

Well, this is the time to start taking care of yourself and your dog at the same time by getting outside and go for a walk. Set some small targets to get out walking with your dog and hopefully change your habits long term to the benefit of you both. Make sure before starting any exercise regime is to check that your dog doesn't have any underlying health issues and make an appointment with your dog's veterinarian for yearly check-ups.

There are some other things to consider before walking your dogs:

  • When walking your dogs in the dark make sure to wear brightly colored or reflective clothing, leashes, and collars.

  • Walk in well lit public areas.

  • Ensure your dog has access to plenty of fresh, clean water during if on a long walk and afterward.

  • Protect your dog's feet from the elements- ice, snow and de-icers and grit can all cause nasty sores so be sure to protect your dog's feet and wash them down afterward.

  • Watch your dog while you’re walking—if he starts panting and slowing down, you’ve gone far enough.

  • During these winter months, make sure your dog is warm or cool enough – particularly if young, old or with a condition such as arthritis.

So this week start slow with your dog walking and make this the daily exercise routine that you and your dog will love! Happy walking!
