Community Gardens

Since this is the garden month and today is Earth Day - Monday, April 22nd, 2019 and Arbor Day is this Friday, April 26th, 2019, I wanted to celebrate the importance of being involved in a community garden. This past Saturday, I had the chance of writing an article about the importance of being involved in community gardening for the local newspaper called the Douglas County (Georgia) Sentinel.

Too often I hear from people not knowing their neighbors and not having a sense of community where they live. Even some who would tell me that they never venture to their back yard to do anything let alone gardening. Why is that we do not want to get to know our neighbors and our backyards? I understand that some people feel that they have their community of friends and not allow anyone else in. But are those community of friends living right next door to you or miles away? If you are so worried about the crime that is going on lately, then the best thing is to open up to speak to your neighbor and get to know them. I know that starting a community garden is the best way of getting to know everyone who lives near and around you. Click below this article is the pdf version of my article.

So how can I get started you may ask? The best way is to find a plot of land that the community can share. If you are part of a homeowner association subdivision, then send a proposal to your HA board at the next meeting. If you want to get, your church involved meeting the members at your church then speak to your pastor and church board to find you a plot of land on or off the church premises. (This also goes for synagogues, temples, and mosques).

If you think that this can not be done, then you are indeed wrong. It can be as long as you have people who have an interest and passion for gardening and who genuinely love their community. Check out the YouTube video below that I edited during the Georgia Organics Farm Tours.
